Body of Christ project

Kevin

I have started a project. I am having an exhibit at our church this fall and my vision is to have a wall full of portraits similar to the one I posted here. It’s 8″x8″ oil on canvas. The portraits will be of members of our church, and that wall of people will represent the body of Christ.

The term “body of Christ” is a common term but sometimes misunderstood, so here is a little background about the term: the “body” of Christ refers to the members of His church, not His human form on earth. The body of Christ is the Church, made up of all those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior. Each Christian, then, is a part of the body of Christ.

Although all Christians are part of the body of Christ, I’m going to limit my wall of portraits to people that go to our church. It will be a representation of the body of Christ. My hope is that people will stand in front of the wall of people and by recognizing fellow church members, realize and rejoice that we are one body compromised of many parts.

1 Corinthians 12:12-14
“The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many they form one body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body – whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free – and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.”

The painting today is of Kevin, he is the security guard on duty every Sunday during church services. He always has a smile and is ready to help. Seeing him is a part of going to church on Sundays for me.

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Ditto what Denise and Sheila said. Your painting is very well done. The shading produced by the bill of the cap is just perfect. I like how the cap leaves the edge of the support. The whole portrait is very impressive. I’m sure everyone will love them.

  2. What a great idea, Joan! You certainly have a wonderful start. You’ve painted Kevin just beautifully with cool and warm skin tones. Good expression on his face. Love it! How many portraits are you going to do? I am looking forward to seeing all of them!

  3. I have to agree with the comments before me…the folks at your church will love this…it so exemplifies and personalizes the ‘body of Christ’ concept…wish I had thought of this idea!

  4. Love the idea! You’ve taken an idea similar to one I had been thinking about for some time and kicked it up a notch. Good for you. I’m looking forward to seeing this project progress.
