Nat’l Juried Show: In and Out

I got good news in the mail yesterday, my SASE came back from the National Society of Artists’ 26th Annual National Juried show with notification that three of my paintings were accepted into the show. I have just started entering shows recently and getting that envelope in the mail was exciting.

I entered five paintings, one of the reasons being that the show will be held within driving distance so I knew I would be able to hand deliver any of my paintings that got into the show. Shipping costs can add up. I once entered a painting in a show in New York City (honestly just so I could say I have shown my work in NYC) and it cost me $35 for a sturdy shipping box and another $25 to ship the painting. When they called and said my painting didn’t sell, I told them to keep it for their next show! The money would go to a charitable cause, plus I didn’t want to deal with or pay another $25 to ship back the painting.

The first three paintings I’ve posted are the three that were accepted.

The two paintings below are the two that were rejected. I’m still learning the ropes, but I don’t think you can ever know ahead of time what will be accepted or rejected. I waited a long time before I started entering competitions, I waited until I felt pretty confident about my entries. Rejections are not fun. I like the painting of the woman below with the red shawl but . . . . now that I think of it . . . . this is the second time this painting has been rejected from a Nat’l Juried Show. I’ll look for one more show to enter it into, hoping there is something to the saying “third time’s a charm”.

The landscape below was also rejected. I painted this plein air in Galveston over Memorial Day weekend. I was pretty happy with myself for being able to sit on the beach and paint this fairly simple painting among all the confusion of the holiday crowds, the buildings and just all the stuff in the landscape. Part of painting a landscape is learning what not to include in the painting.

The show starts with the Awards and Gala reception on September 25th and ends late October at The Center for the Arts and Sciences in Clute, Texas. It’s nice when the paintings hang for a month, more chance for sales.

  1. Congratulations Joan……that’s awesome. I wonder what it could be about the girl with red shawl that just doesn’t make it? Are you planning to try to paint this one again with some changes and see if it gets accepted? I’d be determined to do just that….

  2. Diane, thank you for your very kind words!

Carol, thank you for stopping by so regularly, I appreciate it! I don’t know what it is about that painting. Is it the painting OR is it just these particular judges that don’t like it? And, NO, I am not going to paint it over. Time to move on. 🙂

  3. Fantastic… All of your entries are wonderful and I know you are very very jazzed.

One never knows what will be juried in or not.

But those paintings are just WONDERFUL… Obviously the juror thought so too.

    Good for you.

  4. Congratulations! So thrilled for you. I’m glad you included all 5 pieces for us to see. Interesting, as always, what gets chosen and what doesn’t! Love the first piece!

  5. Congratulations on three of your beautiful paintings being juried into the show! As for the others, who knows why some paintings are accepted and others are not. It seems it’s up to the bias of the jurors.

  6. Joan…well of course these got accepted…they are magnificent. Congratulations!!
P.S. thanks for your lovely words on my blog this morning, I so appreciate it.

  7. Joan…fabulous work and how exciting to have 3 selected. Beautiful paint quality and mood. There feels like there is a story to tell with each one.
Thanks for your kind words on my blog today. It was the perfect thing for me to read this morning.

  8. CONGRATULATIONS!! Well deserved! All five paintings are really good. You do such a good job with the gestures of the figures and the colors in all paintings are lovely. I’m very happy for you!!

  9. Congratulations! I’m so happy for you. It’s great when an artist with as much talent as you have gets some well deserved recognition. I really love the expression in the dancer painting.

    Wishing you every success!

  10. oh my gosh, that’s so exciting, congratulations!! And I love them, my favorite is the girl in black putting on the lipstick*

  11. My congratulations to you also, Joan…very well done!
The paint handling on all your pictures are great…perhaps they were just limiting the number accepted from any one artist at a time?
I especially like the way the young dancer is positioned (in 1st pic) looking to her left as if she had just vacated or was about to move into that blank space.
