Here is what my easel looks like this morning. Yesterday I chose the reference photo and drew a small pencil sketch for composition. When I was happy with my pencil sketch, I did the “sketch” in oil paint on an 11″x14″ panel. This morning I did two quick thumbnails to figure out what color I should paint the barn. In real life (my reference photo) the barn is blue, almost the same color as the sky, that just won’t do. I would like more variety in this painting so I’ve decided to paint the barn red. I’m pretty proud of myself for even making little thumbnails, that’s a step I usually skip, but I’m trying to be better about them.
Okay, now that all this preparation is over (!) I get to do the fun part: paint!
