Since I had painted on the morning of our second day in the hill country, I wasn’t that enthusiastic about painting a second painting that afternoon. But I persisted. I wanted to take advantage of being out of the big city of Houston so I set up facing the little blue weekend house next to my mother in law’s house.
In my mind I kept thinking of the landscape painter Scott Christensen who once went to Ireland for 21 days to paint. He painted . . . . are you ready for this? . . . . 82 paintings in 21 days! I figured if he did that, I could at least paint TWO paintings in one day. I liked the corner of this blue house with the late afternoon sun, and the little bushes next to the corner. I chose a 5″x7″ canvas because, like I said, I was not terribly enthusiastic about painting a second painting. What a baby I am. But at least I did it.
Below is a photo I took when I finished my painting. You can see the sun has just about set, hardly any light on that house by now. I had to paint fast, this painting was about 45 minutes from start to finish.
I like this one a lot! Lovely values in the blues and shrubbery.
Beautiful, Joan!
I love the way you decided to crop this one. I am bad about always trying to put entire buildings in my paintings. It is usually more interesting to crop creatively like you did here. I need to work on that. Great painting!!
This is a beauty Joan. It reminds me of a painting by Birge Harrison called “Woodstock Farm.” Birge Harrison also wrote a landscape painting book long ago (1909 I think) but it is in reprint now. I think you would really like it. Keep painting…I agree small and as many as possible. Cheers!
