Dawn

Well . . . this painting didn’t turn out at all like I thought it would. I had something different in my mind but this is what came out on the canvas. It’s 20″x20″ and done in oil.

When I start a painting I always have a picture in my mind of what the finished painting will look like. Even if I’m painting from a live model or a still life set up, I always see the painting finished on the canvas in my own ‘style’. I took an abstract class from Salli Babbit and in that class I learned to start a painting not knowing what the end result would be. I assume this is more common with abstracts than representational but what do I know, I’ve only taken 2 abstract classes. It was fun and one of the goals was to be more involved with the process of painting, not just the final result. You know, enjoy the journey. But I enjoy the process of painting my representational paintings when I have in my mind what the outcome will be and I’m happy with my process. It just throws me for a loop when a painting turns out differently than I thought it would. I looked at this painting the next day and almost thought “who painted that”?

I will invest in a frame for this painting (ughh!) and hang it over in my friend Stephen’s space at the antique mall. The we’ll wait and see what happens. This strikes me as the kind of painting that will sell in an antique mall setting for some reason.

Good news, all three of my paintings were accepted into the HCAA show and auction which means they’ll hang at the Jack Meier Gallery. Yay!

  1. Oh Joan, this is top notch: GORGEOUS. Lovely blues and greens and totally CALMING feeling with water and WOW, I love it!! Congrats on getting into the Association show, Jack Meier Gallery is lucky to have you included.

  2. I really, really like this one…especially the trees in back as contrasted with the trees up front.
I have come to love the process even more with ‘representational’ painting than abstract painting. But I sure do know that feeling of Who painted that?!

Congrats on your acceptance into the HCAA, and fingers crossed for a speedy sale for this one!
