Last night I went ahead and painted in the model stand using the photo I took during the class (and posted in the last post). Thank you everyone for your comments on which version you liked best. I’ll let this painting dry, I have a while before I have to decide what I want to do with it. When I decide on the final size I’ll buy stretcher bars and then stretch the canvas on the bars. Luckily I think the stretcher bars are available in almost every size. The other option would be to paste this canvas to a big piece of masonite that I cut to any size.
I like working on pieces of canvas taped to a board. It gives me a lot of flexibility when it comes to the final composition. I usually work out the composition ahead of time but this method gives me some freedom, freedom not to plan so much and just paint!
I like the idea of being able to size it after as I find many times I needed to rethink my composition. I like this version.
When you use a canvas, what do you use and do you Prime it? What type of glue? I am relatively new to this and am thinking of buying some birch plyboard and gluing a canvas on to it. Any ideas help. Thanks
Hi Joan, Perfect! This painting gives the whole story. It’s a wonderful painting! I’ve never tried stretching a canvas after painting. I’d like to learn more about it.
