Moscow

We spend half of our two week vacation in Moscow. Above is a photo of Red Square, just outside the Kremlin walls. We did tour part of the Kremlin, there are a number of cathedrals within the Kremlin and we also toured a museum full of royal silver, china, clothing, carriages from the 18th century and jewels. If you turn around you have a view of St. Basil’s Cathedral on the other end of Red Square (below):

There was some kind of presentation near the Kremlin one day so I took a photo of all the security lined up.

One more photo of Red Square. The one below was taken at night, about 11:00 p.m. (notice how it’s not really dark, sunset is at 11:30 p.m.). This was taken from a rooftop bar a few blocks away.

Here we are at that rooftop bar. My husband and me.

The rules for parking your car in Moscow seem to be very loose. Almost nonexistent. In the photo of the intersection below, you can see many cars PARKED in what we would consider part of the intersection. Seems as long as there is enough room left for a car or two to squeeze through, it’s okay to park anywhere. Muscovites especially love to park on sidewalks.

Because the traffic is so horrendous in Moscow, a city of 12 million people, we took the Metro often. We also walked. A lot. But the hidden underground stations are a treat, they are beautiful.

Notice the marble columns decorated with brass plaques. And the beautiful ceiling. Chandeliers, mosaics, marble and granite were everywhere.

The Muscovite women love their heels. Sensible shoes for cobblestones, don’t ya think? Tight jeans, short black leather jackets and sky high heels seemed to be the uniform for women under about 40. We took a boat tour when we got to St. Petersburg and the young woman who was working for the tour boat even had on heels, though only 3″ since she was having to walk over the gangplank and pass out audioguides numerous times a day. Below are some shots I took just walking around Moscow.

And last but not least, these red pumps spotted at Gorky Park. I’m speechless.
