Lovely Ella

Today I finished this painting of Ella that I started last week. This painting is oil on linen canvas and is 18″x24″. This canvas size is pretty large and was ambitious for me. I had fun with this composition, I like the way her shoulders are angled one way and her legs the other. I changed her pants to a dress just because I’m finally feeling like I have the freedom to change things in my paintings. That took me years, but I’m enjoying “making things up” even though so far I’ve only made minor changes from what I actually see. Hopefully this will lead to making up more things.

Below is a photo I took of the lovely Ella next to my painting of her at the end of class today.

  1. I love the violets in her hair and the greens in her robe…I was glad to be able to enlarge this to see those wonderful subtleties!
Isn’t it great to ‘make things up’ in order to make it your own, to bring the piece closer to your concept, and so closer to what actually is, instead of just copying?

  2. Hi Karen, thank you for your compliments on this painting. Yes, making things up is wonderful and does leave a personal mark on a painting, but it’s not so easy! Not for me anyway.

  3. Hi Joan! This painting is Lovely. It is soft and flows well throughout. Also, good for you to make changes, sometimes this is so hard to do. Thank you for stopping by recently with the kind words!
