Paintings from my car

I would like to post some of the paintings I did while up in the hill country last week. First I’ll show you the little panel holder I made out of wood. I took a photo of how I set things up to paint from my car and you can see the holder leaning against the console between the two seats. I put an old quilt down across the passenger seat to protect the seat from paint. This worked so well, I pulled up to a location, rolled down my window, grabbed the wooden holder with a panel already toned and I was ready to paint.

This first painting is a tree study. I drove around the small town of Kingsland and saw a pretty grouping of trees conveniently located right behind the Dollar General store. So I parked in their parking lot and nobody noticed I was sitting there in my car for half an hour painting. That’s not the case when I set up my french easel.

That evening I sat on my mother in law’s dock down by the lake and painted the lake just as the sun was setting. This one is small, 5″x5″, but it was the first time I had done a painting like this and I wasn’t very confident so I kept it small. I like the way it turned out and would like to develop a larger painting from this study.

The next morning I was so excited about painting the lake that I was down on that dock at 7:00 am ready to paint the sunrise. I spent half an hour painting an 8″x8″ canvas, then had breakfast, then wiped off that canvas.

  1. Hey Joan – thank you for your kind comment on my blog and great to meet you. I LOVE seeing your crazy car arrangement, and would love even more to see you painting in it! Great for quick studies – the two you posted are nice and loose. Very fun.

  2. Hi Laurel, thank you for your kind comment, my crazy (!) car set up works great out in the country. We’ll soon see how well it works here in Houston, I might just be a little more worried about getting paint on my “city” clothes.

  3. Hi Diane,
Thanks for your comment, yes, I am having a lot of fun. It’s just fun to paint outdoors whether it’s in my car or behind a french easel. Though is painting from my car really “painting outdoors”?Painting from my car will come in handy when it gets cold though, or when it rains. I’ll put up a couple more tonight . .
