Slow progress

Here she is again. I think I’m just about finished with her head, yay! I got a better photo today because I took the canvas outside and photographed it. I didn’t do much on her yesterday, I changed the color of the background again. I felt like it needed to be darker. I also lightened some of the shadows in her face, this is probably imperceptible to the viewer but it mattered to me.

This portrait is taking up a lot of time and I’ve wondered if it’s too big of a project for me right now. But I will push on with it. I’m concerned about those flowers. How to make them look like flowers but not too “tight” and detailed yet, they need to go with the rest of the portrait. I plan to paint the rest of the portrait somewhat looser, especially her dress.

My biggest problem right now is not having enough time in the day. I have things around the house and for my family that need to get done, so the challenge is to balance my personal life with my art. I know everyone faces this challenge!

  1. Joan,
She’s gorgeous!! This new background color looks right on. It sits back, and gives a soft, subdued mood from what I can see in this head shot. It feels “right” compared to the previous yellowy color.

I am marveling at the brushwork (again): soft edges, grounded in just the few right places with crispness.

No way, not too big a project! Just look at the process photos and how she’s coming along. Keep going!

p.s. yesterday I finally turned off my cell phone when I was in my studio! I just could not take any more ‘reality’ invading the space. It’s so hard to balance it all.

  2. The background looks good. Her face is nicely painted as well.
I try to make my background color lean toward the compliment of the dominant color of, say, the dress, which would be a greenish tone.
