Waiting

This is a 12″x16″ oil on linen canvas. I originally started it thinking I would cut it down to whatever composition worked but ended up adding a table and used the whole canvas. This is canvas mounted on Gatorfoam, which I can cut with a knife to any size I want after the painting is finished.

I have signed up to participate in a show in early March and I’m having second thoughts. It’s really a market with 100 vendors at a church here in Houston. I was hoping to do a demo during the 3 day show but after I inquired about doing that was told no paint is allowed in the exhibition area. Three days of sitting there “manning my booth” is a lot, especially in this economy. But I guess at this point I don’t have a lot to lose, except precious time, since I’ve already been juried into the show/market and paid my fee.

  1. Joan – This is beautiful! I love the expression on her face. She is definitely waiting. Was this painted from a photograph? It certainly would be impossible for me to paint this without one.

Good luck with your show!! I would definitely visit if I were in Houston.

  2. I love your portraits because you put your own personal style into them, which makes them unique. No paint allowed in the exhibition area? I’m always drawn to artists who are painting while at their booths. But your work is intriguing, so I’m sure you’ll do well!

  3. Lovely portrait! I say just DO it, for the art fair. Make the most of it. Get all your promotional materials and perhaps a little mock-up of a work in process. Do something unusual, like some sort of raffle or giveaway, that people will talk about and drive traffic to your tent/booth/table. Make a poster about a ‘free’ demo that you’ll do (at your studio or even outdoors), and get people interested. You’ll be great – meeting the public is never a waste. Good luck!
