Lipstick

What a day! I have been going back and forth about whether or not I want to do a Spring Market next week at one of the big churches here in Houston. One hundred vendors and lots of standing around on my feet. One of the reasons I told myself I shouldn’t do it – in my many discussions in my head about the pros and cons of the market – was that if I did the market it would take away from my painting time. My goal is to paint figuratives and sitting at a booth trying to sell my artwork is not helping me become a better figure painter. I haven’t been painting that much lately so I had to put my money where my mouth was and actually do some painting to justify that yes, I would stay home and paint if I wasn’t at that show. So, today I jumped into this painting and didn’t stop until it was done.

This is from a photograph and it’s 14″x18″. Below is a shot I took of the painting in one of it’s early stages. I usually start with the darks and I have most of the black hair and dress and the shadows massed in.

I am sure I’ll make a couple more little changes, but for now I only have 10 minutes before I have to pick up my son from school so I’m going to put my feet up for 10 minutes. Oh, and have lunch, I never had lunch today! But I painted and that’s what was important today.

  1. I can certainly identify. I have many goals regarding selling and marketing but I need to do more painting so I will have paintings to sell and improve the qualities. So my blogging is minimal for now.

  2. Glad you put your feet up for 10 minutes. I can relate to trying to squeeze in every minutes for painting time. Sometimes it’s hard not to just go with the flow of art marketing, because it takes away from studio time. But it’s the only way to get your work out there in front of the public.
