Maine shoreline study

There is a beach area on Mount Desert Island called Wonderland. You access this rocky beach by hiking along a path through the woods for about 20 minutes. One day my family and I packed a picnic lunch and headed over there. Of course I brought my painting supplies.

Hmph, this painting looks better when you squint. I sometimes tell myself I would like to make paintings that no one knows what they are until you read the title, then you say aha, now I see it. I think this qualifies as one of those paintings and now I’m not sure that’s such a big goal of mine anymore.

That one rock in shadow in the middle of the painting is too dark, or either some of the others are too light. But I decided to leave it the way it is since this is only a study and if I ever get back to painting rocks from my photographs, I will want to see all the impressions I had on that day.

I remember I was so absorbed in my painting that I was surprised to hear someone walk up behind me. (Other) tourists taking a look at what I was doing. I was in my own world for a while and it was wonderful.
