Apples or crabs?

$95 plus $7 shipping

Crabapples! I had seen some pretty crabapples at the grocery store so a couple of days later when my son and husband went to the store I asked them to get me a few. My 15 year old son came home joking that they were apples, not crabs. He likes that play on words. That made me wonder; how did crabapples get their funny name?

There are a few thoughts about the origin of the name, but none related to an acual crab. Disappointing. The most convincing is the old Scottish name of scrab or scrabble which is what they called these apples, dating from the early 15th Century. End of lesson.

This painting is 5″x7″ oil on canvas. $95 plus $7 shipping. E-mail me at [email protected] if you’re interested. Thank you for looking!

  1. I found this: ‘The name “crabapple” is said to come from the crooked shape of the branches, which can look,…., like a crab on its back.’

I like the blue and orange/red in your painting.
