Portrait No. 4

This is the fourth portrait in my series, it’s an 8″x8″ oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman who does so much for our church. I’ve decided to try and make every background in the series a different color. The off white background, made from lots of white mixed with a little pink and green, is not the traditional choice for a background of someone with light hair. But I think it works beautifully, and I figured anyone who is comfortable wearing a pink tie wouldn’t mind having an unconventional background.

I’ve only painted 4 portraits in this series and already I’m learning so much. And I’m enjoying the interaction with the people I’m painting, even though most are painted from photographs.

On another note, I’ve made my reservations for San Antonio the first weekend in April for the Greenhouse Gallery Salon Show. I mailed in my check for dinner at the Awards Dinner Friday night and booked a room at a B&B for two nights. The show opens on Saturday April 2nd and that night there is a “meet the artists” event. This will all be new to me and I’m staying the whole weekend so I can soak in all the art and meet lots of artists. I’ll bring my camera!

  1. This portrait is fantastic! The skintones are color rich and life-like and the off white background a lovely compliment! You’re gonna have so much fun at that Greenhouse awards dinner, I can’t WAIT to see the pictures.

  2. Your portraits are wonderful, Joan! You painted his skintones just beautifully and he has such a nice expression.

Have fun at the Greenhouse awards dinner! I’m looking forward to seeing lots (yes, lots!!) of photographs!

  3. Joan your portraits are so great, and as i said in your former post, you make them look so real, and I think the light background is perfect in this painting.
