This is a painting of a little cowboy that I saw when I went over last week to take pictures of the trail riders riding into Memorial Park. He’s all dressed up for the Houston Rodeo! I took about 100 photos and most were of people on their horses, but when I went through the photos again I found this little guy. He was moving out of the frame of my camera but I like him looking down and away instead of directly at the camera. This is 14″x18″ oil on canvas.

He is so cute in his cowboy outfit! The warm and cool colors really define his face. I like the way you left part of the painting unfinished. I also like the softness of your brush strokes. This is a really nice painting!
I like the fresh quality that you are getting with this one! Beautiful!
this is amazing. How did you do this from a photo??? It’s so fresh and lively. I can’t get anything from a photo.
Thank you Linda and Debi for your compliments on my painting.

Hi Susan, I try to paint a figure from life once a week for practice, that really helps when looking at photographs and their lack of information. Thank you for your compliments and for visiting my blog.

Your experiences painting from life informs every nuance of this brilliant portrait. It is wonderful on so many levels: it is an exquisite value study with a lovely harmony between saturated colors and grays…and I love the sketchiness of it. Sorry for the long winded comment I couldn’t resist, this one may be my favorite of your’s.
