Beach umbrellas

Another great day at Galveston beach. It was sunny and very windy. The kids and I spent the day reading, listening to music, and digging. I brought along my paints and this time my focus was on painting the brightly colored beach umbrellas. I’m crazy about those umbrellas.

I was somewhat limited on my view because whatever I painted had to be seen from underneath our umbrella. It was too hot to sit in the sun and paint, any anyway I don’t think it’s recommended to have direct sun on your canvas or palette while painting. Or your skin for that matter!

Next I decided to paint a smaller canvas in the time we had left at the beach. It was 1:30 pm and the kids were nearly ready to go home, but they agreed to give me another hour. I painted just a few of the umbrellas lined up next to ours.

Below is my set up for painting. I use this little wooden easel, it is very tiny, to hold my panels. I paint on linen canvas that’s glued to 1/8″ thick birch panels, they’re almost too pretty to paint on. You can see the sand makes a nice place to put my brushes. Below that photo is a photo of the finished painting in the easel. When I’m done with a painting I take the painting and put it in the car so it’s protected until it’s time to go home.
